The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exam grading system in India aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of students’ academic achievement. This method assigns grades to students instead of numerical scores. It was introduced to lessen the anxiety related to grades. Grades provide an expanded view of a student’s ability as they show various marks. This method places a high value on ongoing examination of both academic and co-curricular subjects. It seeks to provide a more balanced learning environment. It emphasises consistent performance throughout the academic year. This article examines the specifics of the CBSE grading system.

What is the CBSE Grading System?

A new grading system for Class 10 students has been put in place by the Central Board of Secondary Education. To move up to the next higher class under the new nine-point scale grading system, kids must get qualifying marks in four of the five disciplines. The board has decided to not include a pass or fail on students’ report cards. It requires many minor examinations throughout the year rather than a single test after the academic session. The grading system was set up to relieve students of needless stress. Students will get marks ranging from A to E on a five-point scale under the new grading system. This grading system was put in place to stop schools from listing each student’s numerical score on their report card.

Key Features of the Grading System

There are a few important parts of the CBSE grading system. It works together to give a fair and complete picture of how well students are doing. These are the most important parts:

  • Comprehensive and Ongoing Evaluation (CCE): This is an important part of the CBSE class 10 grading system. It emphasises the ongoing evaluation of students’ knowledge and abilities throughout the academic year, not only their achievement on final examinations.
  • Holistic Approach: With a focus on academics and extracurricular activities like athletics, the arts, and community service, the system promotes a holistic approach to education.
  • Formative and Summative Assessments: The analysis is split into Formative Assessments (FA) and Summative Assessments (SA). FAs, which consist of quizzes, projects, assignments, and oral exams, are given all year round. Year-end examinations are called SAs.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): The GPA gives a thorough picture of a student’s academic ability. It is determined by looking at how well the student performed in both FAs and SAs.

Calculating Your CBSE Grades

It is a very simple method. To calculate the percentage of your CBSE board exam marks, you need to follow the given below steps:

  • Step 1: Add the grade points of all main subjects.
  • Step 2: Divide this sum by five.
  • Step 3: Now, multiply the results of step 2 by 9.5. You will get the percentage.

For example,

Suppose, the marks obtained in five main subjects are as follows:

Subject 1 = 9.2

Subject 2 = 8.9

Subject 3 = 9.5

Subject 4 = 8.0

Subject 5 =8.7

Now, the sum of all GPs = 44.3

Therefore, its CGPA will be (44.3)/5 = 8.86

Hence, CGPA to percentage = 8.86 * 9.5 = 84.17%

Benefits of the CBSE Grading System

Numerous advantages of the CBSE grading system support a more relaxed and complete learning environment. Here are a few main benefits:

  • Promotes Continuous Learning: Instead of just having students study for examinations, the CBSE grading system promotes learning all year long. This helps students in remembering and using the facts they have learned in their daily lives.
  • Lessens Stress: By avoiding overemphasising any one test, the CBSE grading system lessens pressure and stress for students. Instead, the system evaluates a student’s total performance. And, then provide them with an opportunity to grow over the course of the year.
  • Offers a More Thorough Assessment: The CBSE grading system offers a more thorough assessment of a student’s academic achievement. It provides a more realistic picture of the student’s knowledge and comprehension of the subject matter. It accounts for both their daily performance and test performance.
  • Encourages Equal Opportunity: By grading students equally, the CBSE grading system encourages equal opportunity. It ranks students based on their entire performance over the course of the year rather than favouring those who do well on tests.

The introduction of a grading system for the CBSE board examinations provides an improved way of grading students. It prioritises overall growth rather than only calculating points. This method promotes a learning environment. It is suitable for both individual development and academic success by placing a strong emphasis on skill development and ongoing evaluation. Institutions such as Billabong High International School, where innovation meets tradition, stand out as beacons of progressive learning, helping students travel the hurdles of education. To fulfil the needs of today’s world, education is always changing. Thus, the move to a more complex grading scheme shows a dedication to developing well-rounded people with the abilities needed for success in the classroom and beyond.
